Pam hated to take risks for as long as anyone to remember. It wasn't that she calculated the risk or anything so complicated. To Pam there was the risk and then the obvious more 'safe choice'. This doesn't make her adverse to change... just adverse to loss of what she already has. This first presented itself when Pam was in kindergarten. There was the choice of make friends by playing tag or make friends by picking dandelions along the perimeter of the playground. Dandelions won out and Pam still has a strong friendship with Lucy she met that day.
School was always like this for Pam choosing to make friends the quiet way by joining the Science Club, Model UN, and the Swim Team rather than going out for school plays or the more popular sports like basketball and volleyball. Pam was happy existing on the fringes of popularity everyone being aware of her but not involved with her. This changed a bit her senior year when Pam was elected to Prom Court. She hadn't been expecting it but at least she could turn to her steadfast boyfriend Andy a fellow member of the Science Club to take her to the dance. If it hadn't been for her friend Lucy it would have been unlikely Pam would have even made it to the dance at all with no dress and little fashion direction she leaned on Lucy.
Growing up with just her Dad may have contributed to Pam's behavior on making choices. He worked... a lot to provide for her. She considered it her main goal in life never to have to call his office and disrupt him at work. She could manage on her own as long as she played it safe. She would make the sandwich for dinner rather than cooking mac and cheese to prevent needing to call him because she had burnt herself. That changed as she got older and was more able to make dinner doing so nearly every night so it was ready when he got home. She kept the house and did the cooking when she was old enough. If someone were to visit and not know that Mrs. Miller was in Boston and now Mrs. Stein then they would assume a stay at home Mom kept the place so clean.
College is when most people come out of their shells and really start to shine. Pam lived at home attending the University of Vermont and worked at the middle school as a tutor. She did her student teaching there as well not having to leave the school she had attended herself. It wasn't to say college wasn't without it's fun for Pam her boyfriend Andy had joined a frat and she enjoyed attending their events with him. It was also great when he got his own place. There was no more sneaking around then they wanted to have sex. Not that these are extremely adventurous things but Pam was slowly becoming more french vanilla than just plain old vanilla.
What's harder than college is finding a job after college. Pam spent the summer and into the next fall looking for a position. It wasn't till her Aunt in Tellurideco called talking about a temporary but open Position in the local public school that Pam actually was forced to think about leaving home. She started in the elementary school library in March filling in while the librarian had surgery and then filling in for the 4th grade science teacher who went out on maternity leave in May. Then it was the super space science summer program and by the time the school year rolled back around Pam had the third grade science class locked up.
Starting out with her aunt and uncle had been great. For Pam living on her own seemed like a really scary thing. She had no one to take care of but herself and it just seemed like a bad idea. Finally with her own classroom it was time to have her own place. She found an apartment within walking distance of the school so she could stumble though the snow rather than drive the non-existant car she had. So with no car, no friends who have known her since pre-school and no boyfriend (at least not physically) she was stuck. Sometimes though being stuck wasn't a bad thing.
